CBO of the month
Our CBO for this month is the Sudanese Women's Union (SWU) based in Cairo. The idea for this union was born after the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) was signed in 2005. The government of South Sudan opened a representative office in Cairo. On a visit to a handicrafts products gallery organized by a group of women from South Sudan living in Cairo, the representative from the government of South Sudan(GOSS) suggested the establishment of an entity to gather and support Southern Sudanese women in Egypt. The GOSS covered the cost of rent for a 3 month period. An office was established in Maadi and the union grew to 70 members, all of whom are Sudanese women living in Cairo.
What is the SWU?
It's a social body aiming at bringing together Sudanese women living in Egypt to improve the role of women in the society through providing forums for raising awareness about women's health and other issues concerning Sudanese women in Cairo, providing training to help women in developing their skills and organize workshops to discuss challenging social issues.
The Union is made up of Sudanese women, refugees and non-refugees.
Their main objectives include enhancing self-reliance among Sudanese women in Egypt through capacity-building and income-generating projects, raising awarenes about women's health and educating women about democracy and peace-building.
